Celeroton selected as supplier of a complete drive system: A user report

27. August 2015

Celeroton provided the drive system for a novel mass spectrometer to the German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA). As a result, Celeroton has been selected as the single point of contact for the complete drive system (motor and converter) and its specification.

The Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) in Berlin is developing a novel mass spectrometer to measure airborne nanoparticles with mass down to the zeptogram range (10-21 g), and to determine density and morphology. A more detailed description can be found in the publication of Dirk Broßel of the BAuA. Dirk states:”Previous mass spectrometers measure down to 10-18 g. With this new mass spectrometer we advance to new measurement accuracies.” In order to reach these accuracies, the cylinder of a centrifuge has to be accelerated to a minimum of 100,000 rpm within 60 seconds. In searching for a drive system that would meet such demanding specifications the BAuA approached Celeroton.

In the first step Celeroton specified the required input power by calculating the gas friction losses and the needed acceleration of the centrifuge that has a large moment of inertia. Based on these specifications and other BAuA constraints Celeroton was able to select the individual components of the whole drive system (motor and converter).

The customer benefited from the collaboration with Celeroton by having:

  • A single point of contact for the complete drive system (tuning of the converter to motor)

  • Precise calculation of critical high speed parameters in consultation with customer e.g. rotor dynamics, mechanical stability, gas friction losses, rotor eddy current losses, acceleration time, etc.

  • Sensorless control of high moment of intertia load, as is standard in Celeroton's converters
  • Simple system commissioning
