Hohe Drehzahlen von 200'000 U/min bis zum Weltrekord von 1 Million U/min erlauben, in diversen Anwendungen wie Turbokompressoren, Medizinalbohrern, optischen Systemen und Materialbearbeitungsspindeln, Baugrösse, Gewicht und Verluste einzusparen. Im Jahr 2006 berichtete der SMM erstmals über das damals junge Forschungsprojekt am Power Electronic Systems Laboratory der ETH Zürich. Mittlerweile ist daraus die Spin-off-Firma Celeroton entstanden, welche die Technologie in industrielle Produkte umsetzt.
