  • Shifting from heating towards cooling/climate control in thermal management of building, which usually requires refrigerant circuits
  • Replacement of heating with resistors by heat pumps in hybrid/electric vehicles to extend range and combine the heating and cooling

Refrigerant circuit for heating and cooling


In contrary to scroll or other displacement compressors utilized as in state-of-the-art refrigerant circuits, radial turbo compressors, also called centrifugal compressors, work with dynamic principles, which require only one moving part, the rotor. This rotor can run on contact free gas bearings, and operate with a high-speed electrical motor directly. These results in several advantages compared to displacement compressors for compressing refrigerants:

  • Oil-free operation due to gas bearings, which utilize the refrigerant itself as lubricant. Oil-free operation is preferred in refrigerant cycles to avoid foaming of the refrigerant
  • No rotating (or moving) seal
  • Compact and lightweight due to high-speed
  • Low noise
  • High efficiency (especially/also at low temperature lifts)
