Speed, torque, power, mass flow, volume flow, pressure ratio or pressure difference - absolute or relative? These are just some basic specifications of an ultra-high-speed motor or turbo compressor. The 2-level converter topology in combination with pulse width modulation (PWM) is the standard converter for rotational speeds up to several thousand revolutions per minute (rpm). When the application needs rotational speeds up to several hundred thousand rpm or has extreme motor efficiency requirements then other converter topologies and modulations schemes must be considered. Normally pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) is the optimal choice. What are the advantages and disadvantages of these two modulation schemes? Here is a guide to help in making the best selection.

Celeroton provided the drive system for a novel mass spectrometer to the German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA). As a result, Celeroton has been selected as the single point of contact for the complete drive system (motor and converter) and its specification.

Celeroton converters allow for the monitoring of the operating status of a turbo compressor. Hence, the pumping of the compressor and potentially resulting system damage can be avoided.

High speeds are not only required in applications where a motor is used to drive a compressor, micromachining spindle or a mirror. More and more high-speed generators, with speeds of 300,000 rpm and beyond, are finding their way into gas turbines for stationary or mobile power generation, also called gas turbine generator systems.
