New high-speed frequency converter for permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) and brushless DC (BLDC)

High-speed electric drives are becoming increasingly important in modern industrial and scientific applications—from turbo compressors and blowers to turbo expanders and high-speed spindles. To meet these demanding requirements, Celeroton has completely overhauled the frequency converter CC-230-3500. As its predecessor, the new version was designed for the operation of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) and brushless DC motors (BLDC). The new frequency converter will be available from mid-2026, with orders accepted immediately.

Designed for extreme speed

At the core of the new frequency converter is a high-performance control platform optimized for ultra-high-speed electric machines. The system enables sensorless closed-loop speed control from 7,000 rpm up to 500,000 rpm, eliminating the need for additional hall sensors or encoders in the motor while maintaining a stable operation.

With a maximum output power of 3.5 kW and maximum output phase current of 15 Arms (fundamental component), the frequency converter provides ample performance for a wide range of high-speed motor applications. Both speed control and torque control modes are supported, allowing users to adapt the drive behavior to their specific system requirements.

Flexible power input and high efficiency

The frequency converter features a single-phase PFC input with a wide voltage range of 108 VAC to 264 VAC at 50/60 Hz, enabling global operation on standard mains supplies. For applications with DC sources, a DC voltage input from 230 VDC to 400 VDC is also available.

Thanks to the integrated power factor correction (PFC) stage, the system achieves a power factor greater than 0.99, ensuring efficient energy usage and compliance with grid requirements. Overall system efficiency exceeds 94 %, minimizing heat generation and operating costs. An integrated EMI filter simplifies system integration, while the input stage is optimized so that no external input filter is required, reducing installation complexity and system cost.

Advanced motor and system integration

To accommodate a broad range of motor designs, the frequency converter allows a user-definable setup for motor parameters, enabling optimized performance with different PMSM and BLDC machines. The new generation also introduces an enhanced four-wire motor temperature measurement interface, allowing precise monitoring of motor temperatures. This feature is particularly valuable for turbo expander systems in cryogenic environments, where accurate temperature measurement is critical. For energy dissipation during dynamic braking, the frequency converter supports both an internal braking chopper and an external chopper interface with up to 3.5 kW continuous power, providing flexible braking configurations.

User-friendly control and connectivity

Commissioning and operation are simplified through the CelerotonPilot PC software, which provides an intuitive interface for configuration, monitoring, and diagnostics.

The frequency converter supports multiple communication interfaces:

  • USB-C
  • RS232 / RS485
  • CAN

Improved EMC and global compliance

The new frequency converter features improved electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and now also meets stricter requirements applicable to household environments, expanding the range of possible installations.

The device complies with key international standards, including:

  • IEC 61800-3 (CISPR11 / EN55011)
  • EN61000-3-2 and EN61000-3-3
  • IEC 61000-4-2 to IEC 61000-4-8
  • IEC 61000-4-11
  • IEC 61800-5-1

These certifications ensure reliable operation even in electrically sensitive environments.

Robust design and safety

The compact unit measures 267 × 210 × 80 mm (10.51 × 8.27 × 3.15 inches) and features forced air cooling for reliable thermal management at high power density. The device is designed with IP30 protection and includes Safe Torque Off (STO) functionality for enhanced operational safety.

Key improvements over the previous generation

Compared to its predecessor, the new frequency converter introduces several important upgrades:

  • Four-wire motor temperature measurement for accurate generator temperature monitoring in turbo expanders
  • Additional DC input capability (230–400 VDC)
  • 25 % higher output power when operating from a 120 V AC single-phase mains supply
  • Improved EMC performance, now also compliant with household-environment standards

These enhancements expand the range of possible applications while simplifying system integration and improving reliability.

Availability

The new frequency converter will be available starting mid-2026, with orders accepted immediately.

With its combination of high efficiency, flexible interfaces and improved EMC performance, the frequency converter provides a powerful and compact solution for next-generation high-speed motor in turbo compressors and blowers, turbo expanders, high-speed pumps, microturbines, high-speed spindles as well as laboratory and research equipment.
